AAdvantage

From miles to moments: The evolution of the AAdvantage® program

American Airlines launched the AAdvantage® program on May 1, 1981, to reward frequent flyers for their loyalty in a way that felt personal and meaningful. At the time, membership was by invitation only, and the ultimate reward was a first-class ticket to any destination American flew. It was bold, innovative and the beginning of a program that changed how travelers experienced the world.

Customers are at the center of everything American does, and the AAdvantage® program helps the airline recognize and reward its most engaged members. Over the last 45 years, the AAdvantage® program has grown far beyond travel, delivering everyday value and innovative ways to engage members at every step of life’s journey.

Growing and evolving

Whether it’s flying with American, earning miles through everyday purchases or redeeming rewards on flights, products and experiences, members are constantly discovering more ways to connect with the program and its partners. The AAdvantage® program continues to evolve, giving loyal customers more of what matters most, with offers that fit their needs, reflect their interests and fuel their passions. Today, the award-winning program stands among the world’s largest travel reward program — a true testament to its growth and momentum.

The AAdvantage® program has continued to expand by adding partnerships and creating new ways for tens of millions of members to engage, even when they’re not flying. In 2022, American introduced Loyalty Points as the path to unlock status and rewards. Members earn one Loyalty Point for every eligible AAdvantage® mile earned with American and its partners, making it easier than ever to reach status through everyday activities. Some of the ways members can earn miles and Loyalty Points are by:

  • Flying with American, oneworld® or select partner airlines
  • By using an American Airlines AAdvantage® Mastercard® credit card
  • Shopping on the AAdvantage eShopping® website
  • Booking through AAdvantage Hotels® and AAdvantage Cars® programs
  • Booking on the AAdvantage Cruises® and American Airlines Vacations℠ websites
  • Dining with the AAdvantage Dining℠ program
  • Using the SimplyMiles® platform

American has also expanded opportunities for members to redeem their miles in ways that fit their lifestyles. Whether it’s a Broadway VIP night, FIFA World Cup 26 tickets, or a wine-pairing dinner in New York City, the AAdvantage® program turns miles into moments that matter. Beyond flights, AAdvantage® members can earn miles and redeem for:

  • Upgrades
  • AAdvantage Hotels® and AAdvantage Cars® purchases
  • AAdvantage Cruises® and American Airlines Vacations℠ getaways
  • Curated essentials and premium retail through the AAdvantage Exchange℠ program
  • Inflight food and beverages
  • Unique experiences through Mastercard Priceless experiences

The future of the AAdvantage® program

In January, American began rolling out free high-speed Wi-Fi, sponsored by AT&T, for AAdvantage® members across 100% of the airline’s narrowbody and dual-class regional fleets1, and around the end of spring, it will be available on more than two million American flights a year — more than any other carrier in the world. Accessing free Wi-Fi is easy through the upgraded aainflight.com portal. Customers can simply log in using their AAdvantage® number and password, then select “Free Wi-Fi” to start browsing after watching two ads. The new portal is designed for speed, reliability and simplicity, making it effortless to stay connected inflight.

As American celebrates its centennial, the AAdvantage® program continues to innovate by bringing members closer to the things they love, whether that’s travel, exclusive experiences or everyday convenience. The program’s legacy is loyalty, but its future is limitless.

1 Starting Jan. 2026, American Airlines will be rolling out free high-speed Wi-Fi across these fleet types: all single-aisle narrowbody aircraft (A319, A320, A321 and 737), select 787-8 and 787-9 widebody aircraft and all dual-class American Eagle® regional aircraft.
