American Airlines Activates Largest Disaster Relief Effort in the Carrier’s 92-Year History

To provide relief to those impacted by the devastating California wildfires, almost 100 Arizona-based American Airlines team members came together to assemble 20,000 American Red Cross hygiene kits at the carrier’s cargo facility at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix (PHX). It is the largest disaster relief effort in the airline’s 92-year history.

“When we heard about the wildfires in California, we wanted to support our team members on the West Coast,” said John Daley, Managing Director of PHX for American. “It’s important that we lend a hand to those in need, not only to the thousands of our colleagues who call California home, but also to all of those who have been impacted.”

Thousands of structures were destroyed and dozens of communities evacuated as a result of recent fires, one of which was the deadliest in California history. Those who escaped are now facing severe hardship. Each hygiene kit contains items that can be used in temporary shelters: liquid hand soap, shampoo, a toothbrush and toothpaste, hand and body lotion, a disposable razor, shaving gel, deodorant, facial tissues, a washcloth, a comb and a plastic drawstring bag.

“It’s our hope that these kits provide some relief during a difficult time,” said Suzanne Boda, Senior Vice President of Los Angeles for American. “Just being able to wash your hair or brush your teeth, things that we all tend to take for granted, can help bring back a sense of normalcy. I am incredibly thankful to the Arizona team for volunteering their time and working hard to make a difference.”

The Red Cross has activated its fullest resources in the regions impacted by the California wildfires. Monetary donations are the best way to assist those in need at this time; they will help provide shelter, food, relief supplies and health services through trained Red Cross personnel who are on the ground in disaster areas. From now through Dec. 10, AAdvantage® members can earn 10 miles for every dollar donated to the Red Cross with a minimum $25 donation.
